I am catching the plane from Sydney/SYD overseas later this month. I have an Australian passport. Can I use eGate?

A lot of passports issued after 2005 are now machine readable, so if yours was issued after that year, and they are/have started operations at SYDi, then you can certainly use them.
Am not sure if they have started, but goss is that it will be quite soon.
Just remember egate is for departures, and Smartgate is for returns.

With express line I never found outgoing passport control any burden and you certainly can use eGate for inbound one where it is greatly speeding up whole process. You have to have biometric passport (i.e. passport with chip where middle page really thick and hard) - majority of population have them anyway by now.

Thanks Serg but I think my focus is on the outbound - I have an early morning service internationally and I know Austrlalian and foreigners use the same queue so I am concerned if they have no eGates at Sydney/Kingsford yet then we have to get to the airport earlier than 45 minutes before departure.
