just organising tourist visas for a trip to china - what a hassle!! passports, birth certificates for the kids, evidence of itinerary and residence status with a cost of $400 for 4 of us. first and last trip to mainland china!

You can buy in Hong Kong lot less hassle or on the border crossing to Shenzhen if you are heading via HK

Don't forget to provide the copies of your passports.

I've done this a couple of times actually. Seems to be quite straightforward to me. Simply follow the instructions stated in their website.

It can seem a little daunting at first, but after the first time it all seems much easier – just complete the application on the visa website with your expected travel dates and hotel information, print and sign it, attach a passport-sized photo and include with it a copy of your passport photo page and your flight and hotel reservations and you're all done.

Granted there may be different rules for children, though.
