Trying to figure out the best way to get a Business trip Brisbane to New York return for early September. I have 150,000 Velocity points. A Saver fare is around $1300. Any ideas?

Will you be going any more times? If so there is a new article which says you can buy United Miles for a discounted ratewhich would be much, much cheaper. If not you could buy a smaller amount. This is probably the way to go.
p.s this is if you are willing to fly united or star alliance members etc.

Or buy lifemiles. Unfortunately the only promotion they have now is mile sharing. But you can create 2 accounts and buy 1000 miles at retail price, then transfer to account B (use your wife or mum), and you can generate miles at 1.5 cents each. Unfortunately no star alliance from NYC to BNE at the moment (hopefully when AC starts, there will be), but you can have JFK-ICN-SYD in business for 80000 miles, or $1250 USD. (Please google on this as there are many bloggers who have details on how to share miles with lifemiles). Then just buy a cheap one way ticket from SYD-BNE in economy.
For BNE-JFK, I would use your Velocity point to redeem on Etihad, it would cost 125k points in business.

Oops, misread your question. I thought you want to fly business class. With your velocity points, if you don't mind flying in economy, I believe that's more than enough to fly return in economy with Etihad or VA+DL. But you might have trouble finding award seats on DL and transfer in LAX is a pain. Personally I wouldn't waste points on economy class.
