The Pod hotels on 51st and 39th streets are good value. Less than $300 per night, very modern (also tiny) rooms, great staff and atmosphere.

Walking distance to Grand Central.

Was also going to recommend the Pod, note single room are extremely small, the single bed is the width of the room. Found rates cheaper to book through the pod website. Usesd hotwire with success in New york also for big rooms.

I stayed at Marriott Marquis in Times Square for $200 a night with two double beds - good location and room size for the price. 

cheap is a relative term. Think you could provide a budget? Maybe provide the $$ you'd be comfortable paying and the upper limit you'd be willing to pay?

I just stayed at Hilton Garden Inn on 54th st between broadway and 8th. It was quite good and It worked out to be about US$170/night after a price match guarantee. It was a great room in a very central location that was easy to get around

I satyed last week at Holiday Inn Express, Herald Square (which is near to Macys and NY Penn Station). I was impressed with everything (for the price) and would not hesitate to reccommend

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on W29th St, a couple of blocks from Penn Station, last January.  Nothing flash but comfortable nonetheless.
