Hey Community,
A quick question, how many of you are AV GEEKS? As in do you go plane spotting? On the weekends etc.

I daresay that most people who read this site probably fly enough for work that going to airports just to look at planes on the weekend would be the last thing they'd want to do in their spare time...

I dabble. I lived in Canberra last year for Uni and found atop the new car park and awesome place for getting shots of landings from the South.
There is also a high voltage distribution box out the back of Bunnings the perfect height to stand on to get over the fence for the northern side of the field.

SYD is hard as its more or less flat, and unless you get a 3 step ladder, you can only see it from ground level.
There is a small protrusion at SYDdom into the bay, with a car park but no elevation. Left hand side as the planes take off on runway side as with the fuel tanks also on the left, with the 3 black blinking shipping carrier cranes also on the left. Having access to a boat and someone to keep an eye out for shipping on Botany Bay would also be a good place to watch plane landings and take off. You need a car for this one. Pain to get to, someone took me to see it a long time ago, great place.
With the number of planes taking off and landing, SYD is the best place to plane watch.
MELdom has some according to Google maps. A very long time ago, MELdom had a very good spot to plane watch from within the terminal, you just had to go up a set of stairs, but that access has now been removed from public access. Av Sec and all that jazz.
ADL has them, and I see a lot of cars parked near Harbourtown outlet. Flat one too.
Youtube also has them videos about it, think that Flyertalk or another forum also has a part about it.
BUT WITH AV SEC AND ALL THAT, don't have anything too obstantatious.

Yeah I go plane spotting at MEL a few times but it really gets boring as basically after noon it slows down quite a bit.

I go spotting if i'm at the airport picking up someone or dropping them off so long as it's not a ridiculous time.
