I am a QFF gold and have the option for a trip this year to boost me to platinum or to keep til next year to maintain gold ( I only take 1 major F trip per year). If I take the trip this year and don't travel much next ( apart from award bookings) will I drop from P to gold or just off the planet?
CBR boy is right as a general rule. Yet, I've given up trying to anticipate what they might do as it depends on policy decisions we are not aware of. I used to fly QF F a fair bit but I was only Gold for the last two years, as I have been increasingly taking my F flights overseas with other airlines and very recently in the Etihad Apartment. Also, I am not flying domestically for work much anymore (gratefully). My anniversary just expired and I had amassed the princely sum of 45 status credits and only one flight and they renewed me for Gold on the basis of my "previous travel". I never expected it to happen. I would shoot for the Platinum, because the worst thing that would usually happen is to drop down one tier, and if, like me, you seem from your post to have a pattern of paid F travel, they may even keep you at Platinum. Unlikely, but it seems from my experience anything can happen - I was woefully short of Gold or even Silver renewal.
Qantas drops you one tier at a time ONLY if you fly at least the mininum number (4) of Qantas sectors.
If you do not fly the required minimum number of Qantas sectors, you may find yourself having been dropped down to Bronze.
So, if you achieve Platinum this year and then only fly less than the four required Qantas sectors, you'll then be Bronze. If you fly four or more Qantas sectors but earn less than 1200 status credits, you'll then be Gold again.

QFF drop you one tier at a time, so you could go for platinum now and be dropped back to gold for the following year.

Award bookings are not eligable flights. They must be revenue fares
