Happy to be corrected, but I don't think TG offers premium economy since they retired their A340-500's

The only routes Thai offers premium economy on is BKK-CPH/OSL. The thing is though it is actually part of the business class cabin that they sell! So it is actually a very good deal on these routes. Business class hard product with economy soft product.
Fot the MEL-BKK route Thai's economy product is quite good and comfortable. Especially if travelling outside of peak times when you are likely to have spare seats around you.

Thanks does anyone have any experience of using points to upgrade to Business on that route?

Which route? MEL-BKK? You will need to have TG miles to upgrade. In saying that it is very poor value to upgrade. You are much better off just getting a business award seat outright. Availability is very good on this route usually.

JetStar flying direct MEL-BKK and their Star class is on par or even better that PE of some other carriers. Food can be funny, but seat excellent and definitely more that adequate for daytime flight.
