A little bit about me :

I’m a student, always fly economy and absolutely love this site and have been a ‘lurker’ for more than 4 years! So I’m definitely interested in putting the points towards an itinerary that involves either premium economy or business.

At the moment I’m looking at flying from MEL-LHR in Y in early 2016 and returning on an Emirates codeshare out of Europe. One of the options could be to use points to upgrade DXB-LHR to Business or MEL-LHR into Premium economy. Which of those two options would you prefer? I also have to factor in the cost of purchasing an ‘upgradeable ticket’ which is about $200 and that the DXB-LHR upgrade to Business is 24,000 and the Premium economy upgrade is 60,000. I'm undecided.

Or, saving the points and putting them towards either an upgrade on QF metal or a Classic Reward on EK’s a380 Business or even First!

Or

Any other option that maximises the value of the points.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Economy & Premium Economy passengers can't get points upgrades to First on QF.  That option is only available to paying Business class passengers.

Have always found availability and value, good for Australain Domestic routes. Not as exciting as International, but practical all the same.

Not necessarily agree. Trans continental yes, especially with new business seats, but SYD-MEL? Just wasting your points. Though if you have ample of them then why not?

Presuming that your QFF status is Bronze, your chances of a points upgrade to a better cabin are fairly low.  It can happen, and you can increase your chances a little if you're flying mid-week and you're travelling alone and you select the option for an "On Departure Upgrade".  However, you're still gambling with your $200.

Just remember that upgrade while being good point usage is not granted automatically and having low status you have very slim chances. Personally I would not pay extra $200 in hope for upgrade - you may waste your money and get nothing in return. Also IMHO PE is greatly overrated. I would suggest continuing collecting points and trying to utilize them on classic award fly. For example if you after Asia then you need 60K points to book business from BKK to SYD and purchase JestStar ticket in Star class to BKK - JetStar is daytime flying and quite enjoyable in their Star class, while flight back is night one and it is far better to use your points to fly back. Good Luck.

I'm a big fan of using my QFFPs to fly on OneWorld partner flights as classic reward bookings (e.g. in your case if you're flying to LHR, BA redemptions are pretty good).  The taxes & fees are generally lower than QF, too.  Another option is AA redemptions, whose taxes & fees are even lower (!) (although I've noticied these have dried up a little in comparison to the availaibility I've seen in the past few years).

Check with your friends whether they want to pool the points.

a $250 Westfield Gift Voucher which leaves you with 14,400 points left over. You don't mention about your gender otherwise I would say that can buy you some nice tops from Portmans and Jay Jays with some change left over on the card.
