I was always under the impression that access was only if travelling on a QF flight number.

It would seem like you can use the Admirals Club lounge in the US if you fly with AA on an AA marketed and operated flight. From the Qantas Club page:
When travelling with American Airlines, as a Qantas Club member you and a guest are welcome at American Airlines Admirals Club lounges. Simply present your Qantas Club card together with your boarding pass at the lounge reception. Both you and your guest need to be travelling together further that day on a flight marketed^ and operated by the partner airline whose lounge you wish to visit.

Yes - you merely show your boarding pass for the AA domestic flight with an AA code and your QP card at the entry; access is then available to all Admiral's Club lounges regardless of class travelled.
Never had a problem doing this myself with or without my partner anywhere in the US using QP since 2004. I'm Platinum with American but have paid QP as a backup, as this then gives me access to Admiral's Club lounges for both international AND domestic US flights (something my AA Platinum/OW Sapphire does not give with AA); the QP membership gets around it as an adjunct. Enjoy your journey.

Dont get too excited though. My experience with Admiral Club lounges is they are average at best.
