I am flying Sydney to Haneda and i'm wondering what the best business class seats are.. I read the article on this but i couldn't seem to see the same seat map when i looked on qantas. In the upper deck am i better off in the bulk head or exit row? Row 11 (bulk head) or 16 (exit)?

I would go for the exit row. The row 11 has the bathroom directly in front of it. If it is one of the non-refurb 747s (which is the case if the exit row is 16), the old F seats in the front of the lower deck can be a good option, particularly if travelling alone. You may need to be a P or P1 FF to get those.

Qantas operate 2 different seating versions for their 747s - they have 2 unrefurbished 747s with Skybed Mk1 and 9 refurbished 747s with Skybed Mk2. The ausbt article is probably for the refurbished version. Unfortunately HND and JNB are the two routes most likely to get unrefurbished. If your seat map has Row 16 as an exit upstairs it means its an unrefurbished. You might get lucky to have a refurbished subbes in but you may be stuck with an unrefurbished.
I did this flight last month (was lucky enough to get a refurbished 747) and chose the exit row upstairs (which is Row 14 on a refurbished 747). It was fantastic and I would pick exit row upstairs regardless of refurb or non refurb.
If you have Qantas Platinum status you may see Rows 1 to 3 available for seat selection. These are the old F class seats (sold as J on a unrefurbished 747) which Qantas make available to their Platinums for seat selection.
Fingers crossed your flight becomes a refurbished 747!

Yes, 3D is the old F seat so would be your best bet on a non refurbished 747.

Choice is 3 d or f. Not sure if that makes much difference or the upper deck of exit row 16.
Thank you all!

On Qantas 747s
If you see rows 1-3 = reconfig (Skybed II)
If you see rows 1-4 = non reconfig (old First Class)

Yep, that is the seat map for the old F. The refurbed 747-400s and 747-400ERs have paired J seats at the front of the lower deck.
