I have a 3 night stay in Melbourne in mid January 2016. Want to Erin qantas points on hotel booking. Any recommendations near the exhibition building. I'm exhibiting in a Lego expo.

Anything in CBD is close enough, book whatever you prefer.

Is it the Royal Exhibition Building (Old) or Convention and Exhibition Centre on Southbank?
If the first one, Park Hyatt is probably one of the closer 5 star hotels. If the second, Hilton South Wharf as said above is the closest (they are connected)

Book on Qantas Hotels website, it will earn you 3 points per $1 spent, and its the surest way to put your QFF number onto the booking.
Range of hotels.
You could also go onto Accor Welcome on Swanston, make a booking there on Le Club Accor and then transfer the points after stay to your QFF account.
I find making a booking with the a bit more $$$ Qantas Hotels website the best though, at least there is not too much work after your stay, as the points should post to your account ASAP.
Apart from Qantas Hotels and Accor, you can also make booking with hotels directly, outside of Qantas Hotels, but make sure you show your QFF card on check in.
QFF website will have hotel earning points on its subwebsite.
