Has SQ cancelled the seasonal direct service to Athens? Am looking at July next year and it's showing no direct flights (only stops in Rome and Istanbul).

Since when? I flew that route a few months ago. It's operated as a seasonal service over the last 2 years.

Refer to the SQ timetable here: http://www.sqtimetable.com/SQTimetable.pdf
Under ATH you can see the route is discontinued from 8 October.

For next year yes. Lost 1 gained 1 with QR now flying one stop from SYD. Wouldve made interesting viewing with average airfares if there were 4 big players in the ATH market.

Hopefully the addition of the A350 would allow resumption of direct Athens flights, we'll have to see.

Prob more to do with Greek economy rather than plane. But I'm sure once the economy improves, SQ will look at it again

I live part of the year in Athens so I have some experience on this issue.
I tried to book Athens - Singapore for July next year and it routes me through Istanbul with the final flight to Athens on Turkish.
SQ were in Athens for over 30 years and pulled out in around 2012, mainly because of the Greek economic crisis, but also because there simply isn't the demand ex Asia and Australia to Athens in the premium cabins. Athens would be a perfect Scoot destination but they'd be competing with the Middle East 3 ex Australasia.
The Middle Eastern airlines can make it work because there is actaully huge demand from the premium leisure market in the ME and J and F are often full into Athens. There is also massive investment pouring into Greece from ME investors at the moment.
SQ probably get a better return by using their aircraft on routes where there is greater premium/corporate demand - which is where these full service airlines make their $$$ from. Same does for Thai Airlines which also pulled out recently for similar reasons.

Yes I've flown ATH - IST - SIN - PER before with SQ. It's just a bit dissapointing to see SQ pull out of the market because their product and layover are better than the ME airlines.
Will you choose Etihad, Emirates or Qatar now?
