How do I upgrade to Business class using QANTAS points when flying SYD to LAX with American Airlines.

You can't. In order to use Qantas points to upgrade, it must be on a qantas operated flight (can't be a flight with a QF flight number operated by another carrier).

A Qantas operated flight WITH booked on a Qantas flight number (i.e. you can't book the AA codeshare on a Qantas operated flight).
