Are Red e deal fares upgradable or do you need to buy the flexi fare?, so long as there is capacity on the plane can you lock in a business class upgrade upon booking in the "manage booking section"? or is it a lottery of who can get upgrade?
Any hints or tips on this would be very much appreciated guys!
Thanks

Red e-deals fares should be upgradable.
You first put in an upgrade request and will be informed about 24hours prior to departure if your upgrade is succesful.
I think Qantas pools the requesst together and rank them according to status and starts clearing the request list from the passenger with the highest status.
Below's the website where you can find a little more info

Red-E deals are upgradable but cost more points to upgrade than on a flexi fare

So there is no guarantee of a upgrade then - mmmmmmmm - last thing I want to do is end up in economy all the way to Sydney - Thanks for the info guys!

Your upgrade can be processed immediately if there is a business reward ticket availale for your flight.
If you check this before booking, and then request an upgrade immediately after booking your upgrade request should be processed almost immediately.

I purchased a Flexi fare to the GC flying from Sydney tommorow moning and there was only one seat avaiable (left) in business. I requested an upgrade and received confirmation this evening that it was processed and approved. Not sure why as I would have thought there would be others with higher status flying.

Also, note that I have requested upgrades only to be denied the request despite showing avaiabality on the flight :-/

To your question "is it a lottery", my understanding is no. Once the 24h point is reached available upgrades are handed out to the higher Y fares and higher FF status, though not sure which is more important. I would expect the CLs and P1s get upgrades first on any fare.
