I'm a star alliance gold member and next week I'll be flying Air New Zealand out of Sydney. Do I have a choice of lounges (i.e. Air NZ or Singapore) or do I have only Air NZ to visit?

As a Star Alliance Gold customer, you have access to any member airline lounge that displays the Star Alliance Gold logo.

I haven't been in either the Singapore or the Air NZ lounges in Sydney before, I wonder which one is better?

If you have the time you can do both.

Do both. Arrive at least 4 hours early at the airport. Viciously abuse each lounge with no remorse. Gorge on the food and liquor yourself up with their best alcohol.

For the love of God I do not understand the vitriol that some members on here display - why all the downmarkings for this comment when it is both pithy and clearly said in jest? Goodness gracious me...

You will have access to both the NZ and SQ lounges.
Definitely visit both, although I personally prefer the NZ lounge over the SQ (although the NZ can get crowded at peak times).

The Air NZ is beautiful and recently opened, I've not tried the SQ lounge as yet, but it looks awesome and I'd love to see it soon. Give both a try!

Before the refreshed (Air NZ) lounge opened, I would say use the SQ one.
But now with the (Air) NZ lounge open, and up to standard, use that.
I have used the KF lounge at SYD int, just because I told the SQ lounge dragon that the (Air) NZ lounge was closed for renovation, he scanned my NZ J BP and I got in to test it out.
VA PS only.
I tried the (Air) NZ temp lounge, eek, but the newly refreshed one, should be up to 2015 standard.
You could do them both, or spend all your time in the 2015 styled (Air) NZ lounge only.
They are both about 15/20 mins amble from SYD int immigration, ie, quite far near gate 50/56/61 or so though.
QF have their F/J int lounge at gate 10, SQ & NZ lounges are far on the other side.

Be careful Andrew; some members on here will turn on you like a Hills Hoist in the wind for calling lounge staff 'dragons'. I used the same epithet in a comment a few years ago, and still have the visions of pitchforks in my mind's eye...

As others have said, why not try both! But personally I would choose to go to the Air NZ lounge. Having been to both lounges within the past two months I found the Air NZ to have wider range of food and drinks. Both visits were in the peak morning period.

Just curious Glenn what you ended up doing and how you found the lounge experiance in SYD?
