Must admit that every time I've tried them in economy on the 747s they've never been working properly – even for low-power things like iPhone chargers... however the USB ports hidden in the tips of the arm rests usually work well enough to charge phones (not ideal if you have a laptop, of course).
I have a high-powered laptop and often find it trips the aircraft power supply on some airlines (even when using a reduced wattage power adaptor), but usually have success by booting up the laptop on battery, going to the power options and selecting ~'do not recharge when next connected to power' (or similar), and then plugging it in, which makes the laptop draw enough power to run but not enough power to trip the switch (as running and recharging obviously pulls down more power than simply running the laptop on external power).

In-seat power in Y on QF 747 Trans-Pacific. Does anyone know if there are power points for Y seats in the retrofitted 747 used for flights to the US?

Yeah...It's a laptop. I can't switch off just yet and was hoping to use the 14h trek to get some work done! Wish me luck!!!
