Using QF points on MAS
HI All, I am looking to book a trip for two in Business Class from Perth to Kuala Lumpur but the QFF website only shows Jetstar flights and not MAS flights. Trying to call QFF is tricky with a minimum 20 min wait. Are there restrictions on using QF points on MAS or is there a way around this?

In my experience, Qantas doesn't show MH award space on their website.
You can still book MH awards provided there's availability, but you need to call the QFF service centre to do so. They should waive the phone booking fee if you tell them you couldn't book the award seats online.

British Airways website shows availability of awards on Malaysia AIrlines. It is going to be a little bit of a torturous path but what you can do is:
1. Open British Airways USA website (their Australian website will refuse to enroll you).
2. Enroll into BA frequent flier programme
3. Log in and check availability on BA for the flights you want
4. Call Qantas customer service to see if they can allocate it for you.
I don't know how well it works for booking MH flights with Qantas, but I have done this a few times with AA and it worked like a charm.
Let me know how it goes.

In my experience it does not work well – they do not offer anything extra comparing to website. However they indeed have better search abilities.

To be able to use QFF points for classic award you must do it long before flight and you must be superflexible in terms of routes and times. For their classic awards (and notoriously so for business seats) QF often uses most unpopular routes and airlines. For example MEL-BKK usually presented only by JetStar flights despite that QF operates route on daily basis. It is very “nice” service, basically with “eat this and die” attitude. BTW there are EK tickets via Melbourne – I understand desire to have direct fly, but business via Melbourne will be better then JetStar via Singapore and you can try new business class in trans-Australia flight :-). Remember being superflexible. Good luck.

Hey Allan, if you did phone them, out of curiosity what's the points cost of a PER-KUL redemption on MH?

From top of my memory they charge 5000 points for "assisted booking" and base price the same.

HI All,
thank you so much for your advise. I managed to get through yesterday and they were very helpful but still no success in getting seats. The QF guy could search and see the availability on MAS but there were no seats available. As I did not book I didn't ask about the cost of doing it via the phone.
bl5965: I THINK the cost for a business class return was around 100,000 per person on MAS but I might be slightly off.
Serg: The EK ticket to BKK is only bookable in conjuction with an international QF ticket so wouldn't be avaialble.
I also looked at flying to J'burg but the QF website will most of the days put me on EK metal through Dubai adding several hours to my trip. Very very rarely will the QF flight from Sydney to J'burg be shown. Is it really that full?

dimi: I am still a member of BA from when I lived in the UK so I might try through that. Thanks for the tip
