In regards to upgrade requests, in particular with Qantas, in what order do the upgrades become available? I am aware that the higher the status and earlier requests get preference, but say a platinum member on a Y ticket requests say 5 months in advance would he get preference over say a gold member on a Y+ ticket? Just curious as to how upgrades are awarded.

There are several other variables that can be factored in when necessary. That will happen for instance when two Platinum pax request an identical upgrade and there is only 1 upgrade available.
The other factors include the length of time that one has been at that Status, the fare bucket that the ticket came from, or price paid for the ticket, and so on. I trust that others can add to this list. Then there's the issue of how each of those factors are prioritised.

I do not think that you will have any advantage if you put request in advance.

But if 2 x Platinums put in identical requests on different dates, then the first who requested ought to be given priority.

Suggest you Google "Qantas PCV" for a little more information as to how passengers are 'ranked' for both frequent flyer upgrades and 'operational upgrades' (those wonderful free upgrades that pop up when you least expect them!).

Thanks for the responses guys, it answers my question. I am platinum but only for the last 12 months, my wife is gold and we had requested 2 upgrades from about 5 months in advance. Checking seat loading the day before all looked okay with about 10 J seats available from LHR-SYD but it appears that many other plats also missed out on upgrades. Anyway, we are home, all was good in the rear upper Y section and I know that if you want business then best to pay for it!
