Qantas Award Booking routing
I'm looking at a reward booking between Montreal and New York City on Qantas. No matter what day you select Qantas offers no direct services between the two at least for me being Silver. However I tried Montreal to another U.S city on the same dates and it gave me the option to route via NYC. So obvious there is spot free but why would it not show up as a direct flight on the dates?
So my question is why would they not allow you to fly direct, but allow you to stopover in that city? Is it Qantas being a pain in the bum?

Happens all the time. Will you have hand luggage only? If so, just get off in New York.

If there is no preclearance in Montreal, I'm guessing you'd be having to collect your luggage in NY to go through US customs, so just ripoff the tag before you come to the person directing you to put it where ever transfer bags go.
Are you trying for NY in general or one of the specific airports? Seems like whichever airport is put in as the destination it only shows LGA flights via somewhere else.

I think they have U.S. preclearance at YUL. Chances of just getting off at LGA probably depend on carry-on only. Maybe that's why pax in North America have such huge carry-ons!

I find that the QANTAS award flight search engine doesn't include all flights which can be booked on oneworld partners. You may be in luck if this is the case. I suggest using AA or BA award search and ringing Qantas to book if this shows availability quoting the flight number. They should waive the assistance fee.

Is it worth using points ? I recently looked at NYC to MIA, $146 for a paid ticket or 24000 points plus taxes (didn't look that far). Decided to pay and keep the points for a better return.
