Just whilst we are all waffling on about Airline liveries, I want to say that Jetstar and my lovely Emirates excelled themselves by taking the livery to the under belly of the aircaft, looks great looking straight up at it. May as well get as much publicity as you can.
I love a livery that stands out. While many flag carriers don't suit my personal taste, I like the fact they're instantly identafiable as the country whose flag they bear. AA and BA are good examples.
Qantas isn't my favourite airline but the livery is nothing short of iconic and I challenge any Australian to not feel a sense of pride when you see a red kanagroo clad A380 or 747 on the other size of the world.
Others:
Virgin Australia - love it, speaks to it's market and isn't too busy.
Norwegian Air - google it if you don't know what it looks like. World's best LCC in my opinion.
Air New Zealand - It's bold and proud yet understated. Timeless derby colours!
Air Asia - Similar to VA, it screams to it's market. I don't fly them but every time I see one jetting off, I know it's full of leisure travellers and that makes me happy. Happy for them to be hollidaying and happy I'm not caught behind them in security lines!
Liveries are visual images - they need to stand out, they can make or break. I agree with everything you have said. I would imagine for example a New Zealander would have a great sense of pride by seeing one of AirNz's aircraft on the other side of the world, like an Australian would with the Red Roo on the other side of the world, it identifies a great product.
