Do you think with international flights from Canberra starting that this may create a demand for flights from larger regional centres into the capital? Obviously there has to be a feasible population to sustain regular flights but if you can fly to Sydney from places like wagga and Griffith but you can't fly to Canberra, perhaps the estimate of the catchment size isn't accurately reflective of the potential number of people who would use the airport. If you still have to drive or take a 3 to 5 hour bus ride to get to Canberra maybe a good number of people would still rather fly to Sydney to make connections there.

All would depend on what the airlines put up in regards to connections, timetable etc. It wouldn't be restricted to local areas either, if a pax has a 60 min flight for a connection or 90 mins is fairly irrelevant, as long as the flights align up. In Townsville we have a choice to go via Brisbane or Sydney, there is almost an hour extra flight time to Sydney but much better connections and options out of Sydney than Brisbane, and generally better fares, so many travel via Sydney, unfortunately only Virgin fly direct TSV - SYD which can add to the hassle if you are QF loyal but if that's the only option then that's what we go with.

The point is that there is no choice at the moment, there are no regional flights to Canberra! Would International flights from Canberra encourage the airlines to consider creating some routes? Not just the international flights I guess but also Canberra is the largest centre in Southern NSW and has Hospitals and specialists etc and services lacking in smaller regional cities but no flight connections (except to Newcastle) and no train services.
