I can see conflicting information online about this issue
Some have said T4 is open for international arrivals whilst others have said they arrive at T4 and then bussed to TBIT and clear customs/immigration there.
If you look on flight aware AA72 have arrived at Terminal 4 Gate 41 for the past 5 days so you really don't know what happens to the arrivals.
I can only go by my experience of arriving at LAX on AA operated international flights. Plus, visualising T4, I don't see any immigration and custom facilities. I'm happy to be corrected on this.
So further research shows that the flight will arrive at Gate 41 and then instead of a jetbridge being attached stairs will be attached which you will walk down and board a bus taking you over to TBIT.
So effectively you will collect bags from the carousel at TBIT then walk out of the TBIT terminal, since you clear immigration and customs concurrently. Ergo, arriving at TBIT.
Who cares where the plane is parked; you're not a connecting pax on that flight out of LAX. Where the plane "arrives" is irrelevant because arrival processing occurs wholly within TBIT.
The AA website states it arrives terminal B (TBIT) and departs at Terminal 4. There's no outgoing immigration in the US hence they can use T4 where the AA lounge is for departure but as TRB correctly points out there is no Immigration in T4 so the flight arrives at TBIT

TBIT. There are no custom and immigration facilities at T4.

Sounds like a total pain in the arse. Why can't the plane actually be parked at TBIT? I'm sure they have available bays.
