Yes, hiring a car can be a minefield, more so than making an airline booking.

Biggest unjustified cost is insurance waiver that usually $10-$20 per day. Get cheapest travel insurance and you may have such waiver for $40 per month.

You have got to be kidding, surely.  I recall that in the late 80's, if I could rent a Falcon in SYD or MEL for $80 a day (4 day week) , I was doing pretty well.  Almost 30 yewars later, it costs less AND you get the GST back. Wages are roughly four times as high over that period.  Of course the "make up" of the rental costs have changed but the total is certainly moved in the right direction.
