Travelling from Melbourne to LAX on QF 93 and am a QFF Gold - which lounge would you recommend in Melbourne? My understanding is that I have access to both the QF J lounge and the EK lounge as well.

Hmmm, to North America I'd assumed that you would only get access to the QF lounge. however the wording on the QF site could mean that you have both. The assumption generally would be if you are travelling on EK with QF status you can get the EK lounge, otherwise its the QF Pub...

As a Gold QFF, booked on a Qantas flight, you are welcome to use the following four lounges:
Cathay Pacific, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas International Business and (new) Emirates lounges.
Cathay and Malaysia in Melbourne are entirely underwhelming and not worth a visit, compared to the superior food and beverage available at the Qantas International Business lounge.
My preference and my recommendation would be the Emirates lounge, upstairs adjacent to the Qantas First lounge (rather than being buried downstairs with the other lounges, which give them a distinctly unpleasant cave-like feeling).
Note the Emirates lounge is only open within the hours leading up to Emirates flights, and may be closed when you are trying to access it. If this is the case, I would move to Qantas downstairs.
Of course... As a Gold QFF, you would be most welcome to float between lounges and judge for yourself! Have a great flight.

I would defend the dumplings available in the Cathay lounge! I quite often open up with a few of those before heading to the Qantas lounge for the main course.

Really T?
Have you been to the new EK lounge? I haven't been into this one, but it being newly rew, I would have thought it would have been flash.
I don't quite like the basement without windows thats the QF MEL int J lounge. But unless I fly F to NZ, I have no choice but to go into the basement, (dungeon).
OP, I would when you go, I were you, try access to the EK lounge, if they send you downstairs, then go to the basement.
To find it, forget about the signs to the escalators, going down near gate 4/6.
Go to gate 15 at MEL int dep, take the escalators up, thats where the EK lounge is, try that, if they send you down, then go to the basement, near gate 4/6.

Tried the EK lounge, it's closed between 8:10 and 15:30... currently sitting down in the QF J cave.
