I assume that you're wanting to maintain a particular level of membership? Why would you want to fork out all that money just for some status?

Before I switched to Air NZ for my flights to USA In February 2016, I've spent six years flying four times per year in Qantas business class: Perth - Sydney (80 sc) then Sydney - Dallas (200 sc). Return = 560 status credits. So that route will easilly get you the 500 status credits you require if you're with Qantas.
And Qantas may be offering a bonus Status Credits deal at the moment which might help.
