I had a really pleasant experience last week with EL AL. I checked in at TLV and just off the cuff asked if they had any upgrades on the TEL to HKK route. They offered me a Business class seat with an economy meal for $450 USD.
I found that really reasonable for an 11.5 HR flight overnight, so I promptly accepted and had a great sleep and the meals were fine. Has anyone ever done anything else like this on checking in for such a low cost with any other airline ?

A number of airlines offer this. From experience Royal Jordanian offer a business upgrade if you ask, this included lounge access, business class food and also full business equivalent points for Qantas FF being a One World Partner.
Hawaiian Airlines offered it in the departure lounge over the PA once no further upgrades were made by their FF members. It was US$400 from HNL to SYD.
