My passport expiry date is mid August 2017. We have a trip booked to London in early February 2017, leaving LHR late February to return home. As it is just under 6 months will I have a problem or should I renew before travelling? At this stage I don't have any more trip planned after February.
Thanks Brian, it was confusing because one site said 6 months from date of entry, then Smart Traveller said 6 months from date of departure when heading home. Best to be sure and renew I think, even though we are only talking a week or so short of 6 months.
Depending on where you're flying through and stopping at may depend on your need to renew your passport.
Even though your final destination is Australia you may need to be visa eligible if you fly through a country and even if you're not I'd do it just in case a flight is canceled and whilst others get a hotel room you're stuck in an airport because you simply could not be bothered to renew your passport and the transit country won't let you in with less than 6 months on the passport.
I'm not saying that will happen but it's a possibility.
Because you're coming back on QF2 you may have more luck as it's the one flight no with no break in between but I would not take my chances and if the flight were to get stuck in DXB then you're stuck at the airport.
At some point you are going to have to renew your passport anyway, so why not do it sooner rather than later rather than speculate on what might or might not eventuate with a passport that is approaching its expiry date.
I was in a similar sitation and rather push matters to the limit, I went ahead and renewed my passport. All very easy these days, had my new passport within 3 weeks.

DFAT web site says you must have at least six months validity on your passport...better check with the DFAT site and read it yourself....
