No confirmation as of yet. Though the CEO Rama Murthy has confirmed that they are finalising the plans for flying to Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

What aircraft type are they planning to use? Does an A321 have the legs?

Talk about over saturating the Melbourne market with flights to Bali! They'll be joining Jetstar (B787 often double daily), AirAsia X (A330), Garuda (A330), Tiger (A320)

Malindo is a Malaysian carrier (albeit 49% owned by Indonesia's Lion). Does it have rights to fly Indonesia-Australia?

Not an expert moa999 but I guess it depends on what kind of bilateral agreement OZ/Indonesia has. For example Air Asia X flies MEL-DPS with A330's. These are registered to the Malaysian carrier, not the Indonesian carier Air Asia Indonesia (which only has A320's in the fleet). So I guess the precedent is there already.
