The only bookings I've managed to get anything useful out of the multicity tool is breaking up trips that could otherwise be booked as normal return flights or having a hole in the trip (e.g. Mel-LA, NY-Mel).
I've had mixed success. I suspect it depends on how mixed or different the fare clases are that are available.
Most recently I wanted to fly from BNE to PER but via Sydney so I could spend a few hours in my Sydney office whilst getting the 5pm to PER - multi-city bookings wouldn't give me the option so I booked SYD-PER-BNE, then a standalone BNE-SYD booking (which was then linked at the airport.

Is it for specific cities? Sometimes some city pairings just aren't accepted due to the unavailability of flights. (Codeshare agreements etc.)
