Everyone else is $1400-$2500 MEL-AMS return; CX is $9000.

Hmm... Try and see what it shows on skyscanner. I know in Business and First, their prices have always been well above the average ticket you see.

That's likely to be the Full Y fare, which is the default fare for the route when no fares have been filed. Essentially the seats have just opened up but it's so far in the future for CX they haven't priced them yet. Give it two weeks.

Thanks, X. I assumed cheaper economy fares would be available from T-355 (or whatever the date range is for Cathay) until sold out. But if it's a pattern that they only release full Y initially, I guess that makes sense.

$9000AUD is WAY too much even for superfull and superflexible Y and I have a check and seen even higher like 13.5k. It is plainly ridiculous and I reckon that it is about wrong currency like they doing funny Chinese business and populate even Australian site with HKD and then fix them later. Or they simply do not like to open booking that early (for example they like to protect themselves against currency fluctuation), yet obligated by some agreement, so they just put ridiculous prices. For the same period their business on the same route fetching 33k - yes, you read this right thirty three thousand dollars.
