I'm wanting to fly from JFK-MEL on 19th July with Etihad. When trying to book on the Virgin website using Velocity points there is a business reward seat available from JFK-AUH but nothing from AUH-MEL. I'm wanting to know if its cheaper to outright buy a business class ticket or pay to upgrade at the airport, subject to availability?
Upgrade (regardless what kind of) is always a gamble – you may be lucky and yet you may be not. So depends how much you value guaranteed savings vs highly potential discomfort.
Upgrade on stand-by basis is always cheaper(Otherwise, who would ever buy in advance for a confirmed seat before checkin @ the terminal?). Certainty in securing such upgrade is a completely diff story....
