My employer pays for all of my work travel (naturally) - What is your experience with how the Frequent Flyer points you earn (on your personal FF account) are then used?
Does your employer expect you to use them for work related trips?
I would be interested in your opinion (and more importantly, your experience with your employer or employees)
It all depends on your company's P&P. I know that in Government, staff gets to use their points at their leisure and non-related. I don't think a company can ask you to spend your points on work travel (like upgrades or reward tickets). People are all on different status etc.
Previously and currently, all the points I accrue from work related travel, I get to use on personal trips etc.
I lean toward the T&Cs of the airline programs which usually say the points belong to the traveller, not to the person paying for the ticket. If the business wants to benefit from frequent flyer points, they can join Qantas Aquire and use an Aquire-earning credit card for their business expenses, including when booking flights.
Then, if the business transfers any of its Aquire points into your personal account, it's reasonable for the business to ask that those points be used for work travel if that was the intention – but not your own personal frequent flyer points you've earned directly.
Many business travellers also don't get paid extra for taking early morning flights before they'd usually start work or returning home later than usual from an evening flight, so keeping your personal points is fair game IMO.
I work in private sector and am able to keep all my points. Like Chris mentioned, I fly early morning, late evening, overnights and weekends etc especially when coming back from the USA / Singapore so in my theory is the least they can do. Have used them a few times for upgrades on work flights however majority of points goes towards holidays
