The old IFE is not great.
I would define "not great" for you, but I seem to luck out every time I get an unrefurbished 744, as I've never actually experienced "not great", only "not working and here's an apology".
I do believe it's the same as the old international A330-300, which is to say, terrible.
If I was in your position, I'd bring my own material to read and/or listen to.

Correct - its the old Rockwell Collins system.
Smaller screen, and much more clunky to navigate

You're probably already aware of this, but the configuration between the two fleets is also slightly different.
The non-refurb 747s feature four rows in 2-4-2 for a total of 32 seats, whereas the refurb 747s which have two extra pairs of seats in front of the four row section for a total of 36. These forward seat pairs (row 34 and 35) are a bit more private than the alternatives.
The seats missing some windows are rows 36 and 37 in the non-refurb 747s, while rows 38 and 39 are missing windows in the refurb 747s.
