I have Qantas Gold and Virgin Australia Platinum but I'm not a Star Alliance member. I'm flying business class.

Aegean's programme?
Have you done the math to see if you'll qualify for Gold?

Does that trick still work with Aegean?

I believe the absurdity of the loophole has been rectified. However it is still a fairly loose programme as far as I can tell.
Out of curiosity, why didn't you fly QF SYD/LAX/YYZ?

The timing was better with AC. I'm literally in Canada for two nights for business meetings. And this avoids transting through the US. But yes, probably around 500 status credits down the drain!!

Fair enough.
So you'll need 72,000 Tier Miles to go from Blue to Gold with Aegean
SYD/YVR/YYZ vv = 19,684 miles
With AC J,C,D, Z &P inventory, the Aegean accrual rate is 200%.
So that gives you (19,684 x 2) 39,368 Tier Miles, which is sufficient for Silver but 32,632 Tier Miles short of Gold.
Once you hit Gold however, you only need 24,000 Tier Miles to maintain Gold.
Might be worth the investment to fly on another Star Alliance carrier within your qualification year to keep Gold, if you find yourself in a postion to fly Star Alliance in the future. Bearing in mind however that if you do fly SQ in Economy or with Silkair your do not have access to the proper SQ Silver Kris lounge in Singapore, although I'm not sure if your VA Platinum kicks in at that point.

I would choose SQ and convert the Points to Velocity

Thanks Martin. It's such a bummer about the status credits not going to good use with VA. I'm hoping for an announcement from VA saying they're joining Star Alliance!

Does CA do a direct service to YYZ? I didn't think they do.
If you had to stop anyway why not SYD/HKG/YYZ?
SYD/HKG CX110 0730-1510
HKG/YYZ CX 826 1710-2025
Only a 2h transit in HKG and you'll still get a goodnight sleep before meetings.

Yes, it's a stop in Vancouver. Thanks for suggesting this - I hadn't even thought of going via Asia!

No worries! Happy to help!
Price wise it might actually be cheaper. Look out for the I fares.
Reverse herringbone all the way through, consistent product on both legs, plus you get to use the First lounges in SYD and HKG. No brainer.

oooops sorry...thought you were OWE. The new Biz Pier in HKG looks like it worth a visit!
