Looking more and more likely that QR914 will soon route Doha-Adelaide-Melbourne-Doha. I've heard and read a number of times that peoples bookings have been routed via Melbourne outbound from Adelaide, as have there also been rumours that Melbourne will get a second daily QR flight.
A way of Qatar just saying that they can't make Adelaide work.
Actually, it makes tremendous sense how 1) ADL-MEL-DOH-ADL fare is cheaper than 2) ADL-DOH-ADL or MEL-DOH-MEL fare fm an airline demand/yield mgmt perspective. E.g.
A. 1) is easier to fill seats per flight than 2) which means lower mkting /selling /distribution cost per ticket and lower risk of unsold inventory(i.e. 100% Rev$ lost per empty seat).
B. 1) offer more frequencies in ADL/MEL mkt than 2) standing alone. Greater frequencies always improve network connectivity @ hub(DOH in this case) which in turn attract more sales volume for the ADL/MEL mkt overall.
C. ADL pax heading to DOH obviously prefer 2) over 1) if fares are the same. To attract some ADL pax(e.g. your friend) to take 2), a 'discount' must be offered which is econ sustainable for QR to offer due to A. & B.

Yeah I was wondering how they managed to get good loads to Adelaide with the A350, well now I know they weren't.

To clarify, is it possible to knowingly book this route or are these experiences diversions that the traveller is later notified of?
