Qantas Platinum status match to Virgin Australia Velocity Platinum! I'm sure everybody here has read about Virgin Australia's new fare structure which among other things will remove free advance seat selection for Velocity Platinum and Gold frequent flyers, see "Virgin Australia overhauls fares, Fly Ahead; introduces seat selection fees"
Qantas has seen an opportunity and is now offering status matches to Velocity Platinum members!
I rang Qantas Frequent Flyer yesterday morning and explained my situation and asked if they would match my Velocity Platinum to Qantas Platinum. QFF asked me to send a copy of my Velocity card and most recent activity statement presumably so they can see I am an actual flyer who is "worthy" of a status match and not some freeloader looking for F lounge access!
QFF has now offered me a 'status challenge' Platinum status match, all I need to do is earn 200 Status Credits in 3 months flying on Qantas (no partners or codeshares) to keep Platinum for a year. That is very easy for me to do, one business class trip to Singapore or Hong Kong and I am there. So if you are Velocity Platinum and thinking about trying to move to Qantas Platinum and can show you are a regular traveller with Virgin you probably have a prety good chance to ring QFF and get the same deal.
Thanks for sharing! But the status challenge has been around for awhile! I did it in 2015 to get oneworld Emerald status and then now maintaining both AA EXP and VA P.
I wonder if a group of top tier VA frequent flyers who were unhappy with the proposed changes came together and approached Qantas about a match, if they would consider this match... Just thinking out aloud.
Platinum is 400sc per 3 month (or if you crack it sooner they will give you platinum sooner) and gold is 200sc in 3 months. Basically a third of requal - you only need to reach 1200 total, not the 1400.
But if they gave it to you for less then sweet!!
NB they won't accept sc from other offers eg if you have flights from double sc promos as far as I'm aware. You might double check that if you were planning on using that method.
