I made a J class booking a few months ago. This week I wanted to change the dates. I rang Qantas and they told me it would cost around AUD 1k to change dates. But when I checked online it would only be AUD 150 more. How is this possible?
Depends on your booking conditions. I assume your looking at the same booking fare class and some bookings require you to move up a booking class when you change
Call again and ask a different consultant, giving details of what you have seen online. Keep repeating until you get an answer you believe. Ten calls to Qantas can sometimes produce ten different answers!
Do not trust anyone – I been told many times that something ABSOLYTELLY impossible to do (like check baggage through on separate tickets when one bought on points while other on money) yet finally they did it. All those “consultants” have habits talking to you in such command voice that makes you believe that they know everything. Not even remotely close to the truth.
I would also agree with H8. Two weeks back I changed a flight to the US, it was a Business Sale class. First agent stated it would be an additional $8K. Called back the next day, price was now an additional $800 + change fee. Later on the same day was told it would be $400, just the change fee on this fare type.
Also if your original dates were in a promotional period and you now wish to change outside of these dates that may be part of the problem

Thanks. I will give that a go.
I might also consider cancelling my booking and using the credit to make a new booking.

I agree completly with F8, I too have been told certain things which didnt prove to be accurate
One example was when i was making a booking in J and made sure
that my frequent flyer number was in the booking, it wasnt !
The call had gone through to the Auckland call centre
Sometimes the QF staff just dont know the answer, i struck that recently
