If you leave MEL at 16:40 and arrive to SIN at 21:30 then you perfectly timed to leave SIN at 23:30 arriving LHR 05:55 next morning – perhaps the best imaginable timing from MEL to LHR.
If you take QF9 that depart 22:15 (not too late for your kids?) then it arrives to LHR at 14:15 local or 23:15 Melbourne. Unlike SIN where you have to just jump to another plane and continue to sleep, you have to take baggage, pass passport control and customs, get taxi or train etc. arriving at place where you finally can put your kids go to bed good 4 hour later. It still will be too early locally and they will get up next day 3am or whatever local time. I cannot get what you winning, but whatever rocking your boat.

And you missed point of many who replay to you. With SQ you can control time of your flight and do longer leg overnight in both ways.

No - if you are leaving Melbourne or London in the evening you want the long leg first, i.e. the 13 hours to Dubai, and the 13 hours to Singapore

Not with 2 kids under 10, 2130 is 2330 in MEL.
