What is the best method to utilise QF points to fly J from Syd to Milan? Would it be to buy qantas fares and upgrade? Or attempt to buy reward seats with points? Preference is ti fly EK as it becomes one stop. I'm QF gold and looking for flights next June.
you can only upgrade with Qantas points on a Qantas operated flight. so the 2nd leg is not operated by Qantas but Emirates.
upgrades are only confirmed 24 hours before (and not available from cheapest economy fare - so you need to buy full fare economy). If you have enough points suggest you redeem a reward fare to be guaranteed J.
If you can find suitable fly (and it can be not that easy) and you have enough points then get classic award seat. Upgrade is somewhat better value, but you have no guarantee whatsoever, it is gambling and you may finish in sardine class for what you paid more then necessarily - cheapest fares could be non-upgradeable. Plus as said above upgrade cannot be done on second leg.
