Definitely recommend China Southern, and are definitely the best airline in China. Overall, I would definitely not recommend China Airlines (Taiwan), and possibly China Eastern. This is from what I have heard, because I have not actually been on a Chinese Airline.

@CL9
If you "have not actually been on Chinese Airline" what's the basis of the assertion that China Southern is "the best airline in China"?
Are your recommendations entirely based on heresay?

Of course not, Mate, and I do not like the assumption that they are. My recommendations are based on; Skytrax Star Ratings, Respected travel reviews, Safety records, and lasty, direct, first hand accounts, thank-you very much.
It is possible that you, my friend, may have a bias based on something else.

Readers, my "this could turn into a flamewar" overhead light just went "bing". Let's make sure that our Q&A section stays respectful and civil, please.

Here here!
The line between practical crticism and personal attack may not be self-evident to some.

Totally agree John, and to be quite honest I do not see how my comment went over 'the line'. At least I don't come on here and attack someone else's personal opinion, with no useful input on the actual question.
I am going to leave it at that. :)

Air China is the only Chinese carrier I've flown with.
Their new long haul business class is great, only complaints were that it is very difficult to get out of the window seats if the aisle passenger is reclined, and the English skills of most of the flight attendants were quite poor. Food was good, seats comfortable. Far from the best in the world, but I would still highly recommend.
Domestic flights not so great, service average, food was nice but nothing special. Seats on their 737s are very average for domestic first class. However, many of their domestic flights operated by their long haul aircraft - far more comfortable seating in their business class (even their old angle lie flats), but service even more rushed and disappointing.
Should point out I've only ever done four long haul flights and two short haul flights with Air China - I'm far from a frequent flier with them.

Any thoughts on their entertainment, when you flew with them? Both content and technology.
They do quite good deals to Europe.

AVOD system in the new seats is fast and easy to use, but the selection of movies quite limited.

I've only been on China Southern - business class 12 months ago. Melbourne to Seoul
Plane was old but the service was good. Staff did the best they could with what they had.
Lets not talk about the uniform or the toiletries bag shall we.
The seat did not fully recline back. The entertainment limited.
Did I mentioned the staff was great?
Food was okay
2 hours stop over in Guangzhou and was greeted by the airline rep which led me through immigration all the way to their lounge. Nice touch. She spoke English.
The people at the lounge counter was as helpful and friendly as a poke in the eye.
The lounge was ok. Air conditioning wasn't working or something but definitely hot and humid. Food was not good. 4 Coke cans I tried was lukewarm. Was not daring enough to try the beer. I thought this was a one off but the return stop over 3 weeks later was the same.
Overall:
Plane Service: 8.5/10
Plane Food & Drink: 7/10
Plane: 7/10
Lounge: 5/10
Lounge Service: 4/10 (they should smile more or even once)
Lounge Food & Drink: 2/10 (I'd be happier with a 5 months old stale McHappy Meal)
