Has anybody had any luck with upgrades with SQ? I fly regularly the MEL - LHR route, either in economy or business, and have gold krisflyer status. Never offered an upgrade. Is this because SQ have a policy never to offer a bonus (free) upgrade?
In the past when I flew primarily with SQ, I was offered free upgrades only twice when they've overbooked Y class. I believe SQ is one of those airlines that are extremely tight with their free upgrades. On both occasions I believe I was upgraded because my bookings originated from the EU. The cost of bumping me off the flight outweighed the cost of an extra pax in J. EU regulations require airlines to pay up for bumping off confirmed pax.
it looks like the flight I am on could well be overbooked and my booking originated from London. Actually, I find it is cheaper to buy the round-trip originating in the EU. Will keep you posted.
I've heard a lot of people say the same thing about SQ upgrades, the airline aparently very tight, maybe they have very strict limits on what the actual crew and customer service staff can do without all sorts of authorisation from head office or some high-up management level.
