Three of us are traveling First Class daytime Melb - Syd on the XPT. Has anyone used the Day Sitter cabins (The daytime conversion of the overnight sleeper cabins) as opposed to actual twin seats in the first class saloon cars. I am told the seats do not recline but do have an enormous leg space. Is it claustrophobic / quieter / in a cabin of three and better than chancing one of us three sitting next to a stranger up in first proper.
I've taken the First class sleeper overnight. These are a great way for three people to travel to Melbourne (or Sydney) in the day time. In airline speak it would a "suite plus". You have your own compartment i.e. with four walls and a door, you also have your own compact bathroom with shower that you only share with one other compartment. Your carriage is only Sleeper service separate from standard First Class. The seat you will sit on is effectively the bed for a single person, so on the overnight service the compartment is for only two people. If one of your wanted to sleep you could have the staff make up the bed above. There are powerpoints in the compartment. On the overnight you are provided with a complimentary snack service and breakfast. There is also the reasonably good buffet serving hot meals, snacks, and wine / beer.
Yes they are spacious and of course you can check in your luggage in the luggage van if you want more space. On my journey the service was excellent, just make sure when you book you reserve a compartment facing in the direction of travel and those in the middle of the carriage (i.e. not on the wheels) have a more comfortable journey. City centre to city centre, perfect now the sun is up late. Really a fab way to spend a day if you have the time... and money

I didn't know you could use the private bathroom during the day, nice... Could you shower before arrival into Sydney. Is the seating as comfortable as up in the saloon car first class.

Thanks for tip re center of carriage. Should be arriving in now just on sunset, hopefully won't get mugged. It's worth the money for a full days entertainment.
