As has been pointed out elsewhere, the AA person could have helped but chose not to. The new policy provides a minimum service standard only, not a rule.
This experience is good to be aware of. My family and I will still likely fly QF to the US but now feel less inclined to use AA on internal flights given delta's service and product superiority.
Maybe this was noted on this website but where does it state this on Oneworld website, I cannot find this? This maybe a good travel website but I like most don't use this often or when booking travel? Below is what is still stated on the Oneworld site?
Your luggage in transit
The following information will assist you if you have any queries or concerns about your luggage during your oneworld® journey.
oneworld transfers
If you are travelling on connecting oneworld flights, your luggage will be checked through to your final destination at the time of check-in.*
If the time between connecting oneworld flights is more than 12 hours, you may need to collect your luggage on arrival and check-in again with the outbound carrier.
It says "if you are travelling on connecting one world flights" - it is not a "connecting" flight if it is not on the same ticket. In the same way that travel insurance wouldn't cover you if you missed the second flight because the first was delayed, if they're not on the same ticket.
Also there is an asterisk at the end of the sentence which suggests there are some further terms and conditions that you have not posted above.
