I purchased a Qatar flight for my 13yr old son traveling alone. Per their website the rules for the Unaccompanied Minor service is as follows:

"Eligibility
To be eligible for the unaccompanied minor service or escort services:

  • The child must be between the ages of 5 and 15 years (up to but not including the 16th birthday). Children under 5 years cannot be accepted.
  • The child must be travelling on Qatar Airways operated flights."

They're now telling me that it's actually only until 12yrs for UM. He's a "Young Person" which gives much less assurances including access to the children's lounge during his 9hr (!) layover in Doha.

Would not have booked Qatar if I'd known. Is there any recourse due to the misleading website?

Thanks in advance!

I would call them again and request to speak to someone else. As long as you have an adult fare as detailed below which being over 12 he should and meets the age acceptance on the website.

How much does it cost?

To avail the unaccompanied minor service, an adult fare needs to be purchased for the child.
To avail the escort service for the child, Qatar Airways will also charge a return fare for the airline representative who will act as an escort for your child.
