Best chances of Upgrade from Premium Economy to Business to US, LAX or SFO?

Hi all,

Just a quick one if i could. Have a MEL - SFO flight coming up for work, due to J being 10K i can only get approval for Premium Economy. I wanted to check peoples experience or knowledge on whats a more successful route for J class upgrades, MEL - LAX or SYD - SFO. My thoughts would be MEL - LAX due to the A380 and also more flights as a whole to LAX. I am a Qantas Platinum FF. Any help would be appreciated.

The biggest factor is what season you are flying and what day of the week...


IF you have flexibility on what day you leave then I'd ring the call centre and ask the agents as to current load factors and if you submitted a request where you would be in the queue. 

NOTE: It may take 1 or 2 calls. I was in the US in January and rang the call centre to check upgrade liklihood (fm Economy to Biz) - the first operator couldn't/wouldn't help, but when I had to talk to them again to change the sectors home the operator was really helpful, told me where I was in the queue, who was in front etc and his thoughts on likely chance of an upgrade. 

My experience has been that leaving on a Sunday limits your chances as lots of biz travellers going north and leaving on the Sunday to be able to work Monday. I personally try and leave on the Friday or Saturday - I've had to pay my own hotel for one night but that didn't bother me as I cashed in Starwood points.

You'd have less chance of an upgrade on an A380 as it's more desirable. The B747 should be easier to snag like the one from BNE-LAX where I almost always get an upgrade to J

Fantastic, thanks for the feedback and very helpful comments. Il report back how I go. I decided to go to SFO via Sydney on the 747 and back via LAX on the A380 so im hoping for some luck,
