I've just booked a flight on a QF 717 in economy and when I go to select my seat the first three rows have A/C and D/F seats only, indicating its a 2-class layout. However, all seats are open for me to select. Does anyone know if Qantas sells business seats as economy class on certain flights where in flight business perks are not offered?
Yes, on certain regional routes you can nab a business class seat, but expect economy service in every other respect. They're usually blocked for Gold or Platinum members (and above) until close to departure as an 'unpublished benefit', so choose one quickly before they're all snapped up!
(If you want to be safe, just make sure the seat number you choose is also a seat number found on the all-economy Boeing 717s, so that if the aircraft is swapped for one of those jets, the computer won't reassign you to a middle seat in the back. Don't think it should be a problem on these jets, but it always pays to check.)
It's the same thing that happens when Qantas flies the A380 from Sydney to Hong Kong: first class isn't sold, and passengers from the next cabin down (business class) can select seats there at no extra charge: just with business class service. Here, it's business class with economy service. :)
