The problem with Emirates WiFi is that it's free, so everybody jumps onto it. I find it's much more usable if you get on at the start of the flight while everybody else is checking out the inflight movies or having their meal, or during the 'late night' or 'early morning' portion of the flight when everybody else is asleep.
I used it SYD-BKK and had no problem - using my iPhone for web browsing, iMessage and Messenger. I opted for the free offering - 2 hours and 10mb. It was fine for my needs. Beyond that there's paid options starting for as little as $1. Don't expect high-bandwidth speed.
But it was totally unusable. Not even email worked on a laptop. The most was iMessage and Whatsapp. They may as well not have it.
Agreed that the problem is that it's free for 10MB then just $1 for 500MB. I'd happily pay $20 to get decent speeds. I don't need ground broadband speeds, just half decent reliable speeds.
I used it regularly SYD/BKK. It comes and goes just don't expect stellar speeds. Perfectly fine for IMs (Whatsapp) and I have even had a Whatsapp call go through, it was passable for a quick chat but choppy and droppy. Outlook works fine just slow. I wouldn't plan to rely on it and web browsing is painful especially on sites that require a tonne of bandwidth.
