I was recently reading something on One Mile at a Time and someone commented that there is a strong rumor that Air NZ is about to start a direct Auckland to San Diego route. Has anyone else heard about this? Seems bazar but would explain why their final 787 orders have more business class seating
Agree that San Jose and San Diego both wouldn't be viable for reasons above. I wouldn't be shocked to see a service to Chicago a few days a week. The Houston route has proved very succesful for them for east coast connections and O'Hare is another United hub.
Auckland to San Diego route is not happening as it will be in conflict with current Air NZ Auckland to Los Angeles services. Chicago has been on Air NZ listed but United is not happy about them doing it but things could have changed. An Auckland to Chicago service would give Air NZ the northern eastern coast market, as Auckland to Houston has given Air NZ access to the Southern states, Caribbean and Mexico. Both Air NZ and United are happy about this service.
With regards to why the remaining 4 787's will increase business premier and premium economy seats, there has been increase demand for these products, plus the remaining 787's are earmarked for long haul international services like Auckland to Houston, Auckland to Vancouver, Auckland to Japan, etc. Air NZ is also looking at additional Asian and possibility India (in association with Air India ) routes.

Agree Concorde - San Diego doesn't make sense given the limited onward connections.

Isn't San Diego quite close to LA. Well anyway, both are not viable.
