I am a platinum charge card holder. I called up the concierge around 2 weeks ago about it and they said there are currently no plans to bring it to Australia which is unfortunate.
I also have a Plat card. called yesterday and had the same result. they said that they are always reviewing their product offering but at this point were not aware of any plans.
The downside of the metal cards is that they set off airport scanners if you keep your wallet in your pocket. They make your wallet yet another thing that you have to pull out and put in the tray for separate scanning.
Doesn't everyone just put their wallet in the tray as a matter of course anyway? I know I do. And of course in the US, they want everything out of your pockets.
Hi all - hopefully I'm not getting your hopes up, though I have asked 2 sources for clarification on what I recently spotted.
In the latest issue of the 'Departures' magazine (our AMEX Platinum magazine), they have changed the image to the metal card, rather than the traditional. Mind you, this was edited by the AMEX AUS team.
Further to this, I asked the question via Twitter, AMEX AUS's response was:
"Pretty cool hey! We'll definitely update you when the changes will come into effect for our card products."
Finally, a friend of mine who works at AMEX HQ also confirmed for me that it is most likely to be announced soon with changes coming to the card (but still unconfirmed).
Some changes in card design can be seen with the AMEX Qantas card's which have all now been updated with the new logo (as seen on their homepage).

Doubtful. The premium card market is so competitive in the US they have to keep pushing the mark, AMEX Platinum is unrivalled here.
