Flying from HK/LHR in Sep17 and looked at the booking online. I was surprised it is going to cost approx $140 per person each direction. I am travelling with my 13 year old son and didn't really want to be split up when travelling but nearly $600 seems expensive?

You won't be split up. If you read the BA website, it says families will be seated together. I wouldn't worry too much.

Not necessarily true. I just flew from Singapore to Sydney in business with my wife and two children (5 and 3) and my wife was seated in another row. Luckily, while boarding we managed to swap her seat so we could all sit together.
Before you book on BA (Budget Airline- Ceo Cruz is from Vuelling, a budget airline in the EU)check on line just how many customers have 'booked advance seats' paid then been split up and put in different seats to the ones 'booked'. I'm a Brit and over here BA is fast becoming a joke-its now stopping free food on long haul!!! So if you want to travel in a ying tang style and pay for an inferior product be my guest.

Just one of the fun things about using BA. You either pay or have oneworld elite status which may give you access a little earlier than everyone else.
